The theme of the year 2020 is obviously DISASTER, all caps, bold, and underlined, but another sub-theme might be EXHUME –we, at least those with the privilege, spent so much time at home that we have managed to exhume any kind of relic that can provide momentary entertainment. We have been overdosing on enforced nostalgia in the past few months so much we could gag, but we are still grateful.
Among the zombified corpses my favorite is this Ziggy pencil topper. Back in the 80’s my dad would give this as pasalubong after each trip to Manila, unbeknownst to us it came free with the huge bottle of Tang. We’ve collected around 10. We thought this one is a blue-haired female and named her Michelle, only to realize later on that it is still the same old bald Ziggy wearing a blue football headgear. I still smell Tang whenever I see anything Ziggy-related. Not that there are a lot, sadly he seemed to have vanished into total obsolescence.

To my joy I’ve also managed to exhume my old Friendster blog. Before it folded Friendster advised everyone to download our data, and I was able to back-up almost a hundred blog entries written during my moonlighting years of 2007 until late 2008, when I’ve decided to migrate to blogspot. I re-read them all, and while a few entries made me feel wow I was such a great writer, most entries made me cringe. The Friendster blog eventually got assaulted by multiple porn links in the comments. In one such entry I’ve used the term “Smegma”, and in a day it received 30 automated comments inviting me to a porn party in Ortigas.
Which would be fine and good and well-deserved if I meant in the entry that someone has a fetish for eating smegma or something similar, but I was not even referring to the cheesy curd-like pre-circumcision substance in the prepuce of supot boys. I was, in fact, referring to… Smegma Computer Shop. Yes, back in 2007, there was a computer shop here in Sta. Rosa near the market area named… SMEGMA. It still boggles the mind.

What an interesting choice of name. I passed by a restaurant in General Santos City called “Shu-to-kil.” I don’t think you’ll come out alive after eating unlimited rice there.
