The last movie I was trying to watch in Netflix was something called Sparkle, the final movie of Whitney Houston, which also stars Jordin Sparks. It was released sometime in 2011 or 2012, the most chaotic years in my life (drama!).

But of course, the reason I couldn’t click on Sparkle fast enough was because I thought it was related to the movie Glitter, also starring another vocal powerhouse, the one and only elusive chanteuse, Mariah Carey! I distinctly remember back in 2002 when they showed Glitter in Robinson’s Ermita. It was the only movie brave enough (or resigned to failure enough) to get released alongside Harry Potter. Or was it Lord of The Rings. In any case, I decided to watch Glitter one afternoon because I had no patience to queue for a huge fantasy blockbuster. Actually that’s a lie–I had all intentions to watch Glitter. I was looking forward to it, wrote it on my black organizer! That was the time when Mariah was going through some financial and personal troubles, and the movie didn’t help much. But of course, I absolutely loved it. There were about five of us in the cinema. I was laughing at multiple portions of the movie because there were many unintentionally hilarious scenes. Which is not a knock on Queen Mimi, as she was just a few years away from experiencing her fabulous emancipation. My favorite cosmic scene was while she was composing “Never Too Far”, her ex-bf was also composing the exact same song, miles away! Had the boyfriend not been killed, would they have gone to the courts to fight over royalties?
As expected, Sparkle was in no way related to Glitter. Or maybe they are existing in the same cinematic universe, now all we need is another 90’s vocal powerhouse to have a movie called… Scintillate.
