The Itinerarians

Been trying to plan a beach outing before a new variant emerges. Who am I kidding, I’m not the one planning. Were it not for the kindness of other people I would never be able to go anywhere, because I have poor travel planning skills and the ultimate ligawin. Or maybe because I haven’t really tried taking charge, thinking that there are other people I can always depend on. Who knows, maybe I would be fantastic at it.

Or not. I can still remember the very first time my cousins and I were planning to go to the beach, way back in the late 80’s. One week before the trip we started planning out our itinerary, listing down the activities on a grade 2 note pad.The first activity we had agreed upon read thus: “8:00-8:10 am- 2-minutes fun and make a sand castle”. Of course, as soon as we got there we had forgotten all about our damn itinerary and just made tampisaw on the beaches of Nasugbu, until our mother ordered us to dry ourselves and eat lunch.

When we were in residency training, for some reason our batch assigned Jana and me to prepare the activities for our batch outing, which only happens once a year. “Magle-lur tayo, yun ang activity!” Jana and I chorused. As soon as we got to Subic heavy rains fell down and there was brown out and no one could even approach the beach. So we drank ourselves to alcoholic coma, and when the lights came back on we made total fools of ourselves in the videoke. Best disastrous outing ever, we said. Until the following year, when we had our batch outing… during Ondoy! ^^ (Which I had written about and exploited so many times already in this blog and no longer deserves to be repeated, like an old joke that has lost its novelty).
