My Gen-Z Day

I see I’ve forgotten all about this blog again! I just console myself with my belief that most of the writing happens in the brain, while taking a shower, while eating lunch in Jollibee, while staring at the ceiling, but of course none of that matters until you actually put pen or paper or actually blog! I haven’t been following my own advise to just write and not think about it too much, and the hope is that I will be more diligent in maintaining this bloggeth!

Recently erased phone and ipad apps that distract and take away time from reading and writing, like social media apps, but since many of my friends and patients contact me via Facebook I’ve decided not to deactivate it altogether. But since I don’t trust myself to not mindlessly scroll and lose hours on end I’ve just unfollowed everyone, so whenever I get tempted to open Facebook I see… nothing! Sometimes Facebook tries to outsmart me by still putting something on my feed, like suggested accounts to follow or a series of ads, but none of that compels me to scroll mindlessly at least.

Yesterday I went to see Six. Namtab Pots, his partner Paul, and Ruth Marx have booked this show last April. I have no idea what it’s about, and was surprised at the sort of concert format of this Broadway musical. I was also surprised that most of those in the audience were very, very young, and that they were so into the show and they were singing along with the songs! I am yet to figure out in what way Six had already penetrated the Pinoy pop culture scene way ahead of its run in Solaire.

As soon as the show ended I dashed out of Solaire because Agent Brad Follmer had managed to get us tickets for The Guts Tour of Oliva Rodrigo. The instruction was for me to go down the escalator, turn right, and traverse the entire casino until I get to the hotel lobby, where he and his driver would pick me up at 4:02 PM. To make sure I wouldn’t get lost he sent me a map. I reached the pick-up area at exactly 4:02 PM, at exactly the same time they arrived. “Get in!” he growled.

I’m only familiar with Drivers License and Good 4 U, and I frequently mistake her songs for some other pop/alt song. I had been mulling over what the verses of Good 4 U remind me of, and after months of thinking about it and without doing any research it dawned on me that the verses sound too much like Mariah Carey’s We Belong Together! But I wouldn’t dare tell this to Agent Brad Follmer, who is a huge, huge fan. By the time I got into his car he was already wearing an Olivia Rodrigo shirt, friendship bracelets, a purple cap, and fanning himself with a mauve abaniko. I guess he can’t find a purple Jisu for more Gen-Z-ness. We only have 3 hours to get to The Philippine Arena, which sounds ridiculous but we’ve all heard how difficult it is to get there.

Surprisingly we were able to get there after just an hour and a half! Fun concert, but since we were assigned in the Upper Box and could only see a tiny, tiny Olivia Rodrigo from afar we would have appreciated if they had turned on the LED screens on both sides of the stage. And then, after the concert it took us three hours just to leave… the Philppine Arena Compound! Still it was fun not just watching the concert but also watching the crowd. In the middle of the concert the three girls in front of us sobbed and hugged each other. “May moment sila,” Agent Brad Follmer said.

“They must be high school besties, and they must be graduating next year,” I said.

“I hope they don’t destroy their friendship… over a cute guy,” Agent Brad Follmer said with foreboding.
